Marriott brings the Moxy lifestyle to Bergen

  • Core Hospitality and Marriott International have successfully opened Moxy Bergen, which owner GC Rieber Eiendom claims is “the most sustainable hotel in the country”.

Certified as a BREEAM Excellent hotel, the new Moxy Bergen is likely to prove an attractive option for eco-minded travellers looking for somewhere fun to stay in Norway.

Bringing the Moxy lifestyle to Bergen

Moxy, Marriott International’s affordable experiential brand for youthful travellers, has chosen Norway’s second largest city Bergen as the home of its newest outpost.

This 199-room hotel is characterised by its playful design and facilities that positively encourage engagement between guests and locals. Set in Bergen’s Solheimsviken area, the city’s main business park, the property will doubtless appeal to corporate and leisure travellers alike.

“We are very happy to open this beautiful hotel and now want to capitalise on the growing demand for truly authentic experiences,” said general manager Monica Selvik. “Moxy Bergen was designed to cater to the new demographic of travellers and is unlike any hotel in the city.

“During the day, you’ll find locals and travellers working and playing side by side at the Moxy. At night, you might find them challenging each other to a game of Jenga or toasting over drinks.”.

    A strong focus on sustainability

Both the hotel’s operator Core Hospitality and owner GC Rieber Eiendom wanted the property to be as environmentally friendly as possible. This is why every aspect of the Moxy Bergen has sustainability at its core.

The property was constructed following practices defined by BREEAM, an international scheme that assesses a building’s sustainability and awards independent certifications; it’s been named a BREEAM Excellent hotel, the certification’s second-highest award. The scheme has also applied for Green Key certification for its operations.

“Being the only design certified BREEAM Excellent hotel in Norway, as of date, we claim that this is the most sustainable hotel in the country,” said Tor Instanes, CEO of GC Rieber Eiendom.

“Sustainable choices have been taken in the design and build phase in all of BREEAM’s nine categories: management, energy usage, health and wellbeing, public transport, water usage, choice of materials, construction waste, land use and ecology, and pollution. The hotel is cooled down by water from the fjord, it is heated by city central heating, and excess heat is repurposed to energy in our refrigeration systems.”

An important development for Core Hospitality

Core Hospitality already operates another Moxy-branded hotel in the Danish capital Copenhagen, while it also has plans to open a property under the same flag in Tromsø over the next few years.

“Today marks our entrance into the Norwegian hotel market,” said Per Denker Sørensen, CEO of Core Hospitality. “It is very exciting to enter a new country with such a strong brand that is unique to the marketplace.

“It is a big day for us and a big honour to have been part of this development. We look very much forward to operating this hotel and to put Bergen on the Marriott map.”
